Waterfrontin’

It’s probably not going to get the same kind of attention as crime and taxes and some of the other sexy issues in this year’s mayoral race, but citizen access to the Jersey City waterfront is a sad tale of missed opportunities and corporate and (local government) indifference. Compare the JC waterfront and the Hoboken [...]

Dear job

How are you; it’s been a long time. I know that these are not great times for you. When we were last together, at the end of 2008, I was happy to be leaving you. Frankly, I had another lined up (ex job to next job, ya know?) but things changed pretty quickly since. Well, [...]

I’ve been away

Has it been a week since I last posted? Yes, I was reminded by several people. (You read me! You really read me!) To be honest, I’ve been virtually speechless since last weekend. I guess by way of explanation, you should know that I have two virtual children. That is to say, not biological, but [...]

Finally, spring?

It’s been a bit of a tease, to be sure, but spring is really gonna happen this week. Lord knows I couldn’t find any on the waterfront this weekend.

Beisbol been very, very good (updated)

On the one hand, losing to Venezuela (2-0) was painful for Puerto Rico and its fans (like me).  On the other hand, watching K-Rod get a four-out save to close the game out made the Mets fan in me say Vaya! An excellent game.

Now, it’s USA – Puerto Rico mañana! Loser goes home.

Beisbol been very, very good

Spring is in. Well, it will be later this week, anyway. But for many of us, Spring has been here for a couple of weeks already with the start of the 2nd World Baseball Classic. For the uninitiated, the WBC pits 16 national baseball teams from around the world in a World Cup or Davis [...]

No speakie

A relatively well-kept secret is that I am a prep school dropout. More accurately, a prep school kicked out. St. Peter’s Prep, to be exact. I made it through two-and-a-half years at one of Jersey City’s oldest private schools, on scholarship (academic scholarship, thank you very much.) I was asked (advised, ordered, whatever) to leave [...]

Liz and Mel hit the road

It wasn’t quite a farewell party, more like a see ya later kinda thing. My sister Elizabeth and her husband Melvin are retiring and moving all the way down to Virginia. She’s always been a classy broad, never too shy to remind you of that time she literally saved your ass (or wiped same) when [...]

Dear Jon

I hope this note finds you in good health. Now, what the hell are you doing? Are you trying to give Republican Chris Christie your job? Do you even want to be governor any more? I’m sure you saw the recent Fairleigh Dickinson/ PublicMind poll that shows you trailing Christie by nine points. Sure, it’s [...]

We Insist! We win!

One of the last things I did with great passion at WBGO, Jazz 88, the radio station where I used to work, was producing “We Insist!: Jazz Speaks Out,” a four-part podcast series looking at the impact of jazz music on social change movements and African-American history and culture. Hosted by the fantastic Angelika Beener [...]
